A Favorite Actress Leaves Us {Martha Hyer, Les Vignobles Fan}

We at Gourmetfocus.com were saddened to hear of the loss of one of our favorite actresses last year, Martha Hyer.

Martha performed in several television programs and 50 or so movies in her illustrious career. Of all her movies, “the Sons of Katie Elder “, with John Wayne and Dean Martin was by far my favorite. I must confess to a little bit of a high school crush on her back in the 50's.
    Imagine my surprise when I found out that she had tasted some of our Les Vignobles gourmet specialties products and was gracious enough to let me know how much she enjoyed them. I told her how much I enjoyed her films and hinted that if she had any photos available I would certainly love to have one. She was such a thoughtful and gracious lady, she not only sent me photos, she autographed them as well and surprised me with this lovely note.

    May you rest in peace Martha and thank you for the many hours of entertainment you provided me and so many of your loyal fans.

Mandarin Season in Full Swing, Potato Rolls, and More {Champagne Jelly, Mandarin Mimosa}

Hi, all!  This is Jonathon's daughter-in-law, Sarah.  I have the tough job of creating most of the food photography for the site, and I thought I'd take a post and introduce myself.  :)

Jonathon has been focusing all his attention on mandarins the last few weeks, working in conjunction with beautiful Highland Orchard in Penryn, California.  In fact, he will be appearing there for Orchard Days on December 7 from 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m., so you should make a trip if you can.

Right now, I am sitting here in surprisingly frigid South Texas, thinking about this:
(and missing sunny California for a bit)

In an attempt to warm up the house, and use up the very last of the Thanksgiving leftovers from the freezer, I pulled out my grandma's recipe for potato rolls.  I hadn't attempted to make them on my own, but she taught me well, and so has Jonathon.  :)  In tried and true fashion, she left the time and temperature off when she typed up the card so many years ago, but I managed with a peek at some other bread recipes, and they turned out perfectly!

I scanned the card, because, hey - she seemed to take her spelling cues from a certain Vice President.  Also, all her cards are a charming combination of typing and handwriting, and they make me smile.  I am sure you have the same kinds of things about your family recipes.  I know Jon does.

She notes on the back that it takes one to two hours to rise after shaping into crescents, and I note that they should be baked at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, and that the recipe doubles beautifully.  Trust me, you will want to make lots.

Just to bring all of this together, and because I can't resist (ever) a chance to have some of my bottled California sunshine:

I do hope you'll try these rolls next time you have some leftover mashed potatoes, and do yourself a big, big favor and try some of this delicious Champagne Mandarin Mimosa jelly!
